By: Tina HuangWhat is boba?“Boba” are gluten-free pearls made from tapioca starch extracted from cassava plants that are usually cooked with brown sugar or sugary caramelized syrup into delicious chewy, black pearls that many have come to love. They are added into drinks of all kinds - black tea, green tea, milk tea, fruit tea, smoothies, slushies - to turn it into an indulgent drink. Although the word “boba” refers to the actual black tapioca pearls themselves, the moniker has been adopted by many to refer to the entire drink - tea, toppings, fat straws, and sugary goodness. Where did boba come from? Boba, the drink, originates from Taiwan. The pearls themselves were initially used as a topping, known as fen yuan, in shaved ice desserts. At that time, milk tea was also a popular drink that was regularly consumed. Thus, by a spark of genius, the two were combined, creating the beloved (and addictive) drink we have today. RecommendationsThe amount of boba places out in the Los Angeles area can be overwhelming when picking which places to try. Fear not!
